Yesterday was my “Friday” (the last day of work I was scheduled before having a day off – aka the day before Saturday). I couldn’t have been more ready to have a day off work and was trying to get through my shift without incident. I wasn’t in a bad mood, but I definitely ready to be finished work for the day and on my way home to my nice warm bed.
For those of you that didn’t know, I drive a transit bus. I love what I do and find it fascinating to meet different people. However, the most challenging parts of my job are traffic, construction and dealing with customers. While some customers are more difficult to deal with than others, there are a lot more amazing passengers that ride the bus every day.
Yesterday evening, as I was nearing the end of my shift, a man came up to me as he was preparing to disembark at the next bus stop. He asked me “Is your name Matt?” Now the first thing that went through my mind is How does this guy know who I am? I glanced in my mirror and realized that I had driven a different bus on which this man had been a passenger.
After briefly chatting with this passenger, it turns out that this passenger had taken time out of his day to call my employer to provide a commendation about me and my friendly attitude towards him on his last bus ride. It was amazing to be able to thank him in person for taking time out of his day to provide positive feedback about my performance about which my supervisor had already followed up with me about.
I was having a less than stellar day, but having this passenger remember my name and express his gratitude for the service we provide as bus operators certainly improved my mood and made me feel awesome. I am always fascinated about how life is able to put the right people in the right places at just the right time to make everything seem just a little better. I am really thankful that this passenger was able to remind me why I love my job.
