Travelling by airplane can be an adventure of its own between weather, mechanical problems, and a million other delays. Here are a few suggestions about how to make your travel experience far less stressful for yourself this year.
If you have an event that you have to be at, give yourself at least a day to get there. Flight delays and cancellations happen all the time, and I promise that the airport agent will be much more sympathetic to your concerns when you tell them you need to get there by tomorrow, rather than saying you’re going to miss your best friend’s wedding that starts moments after you were scheduled to land.
2. Bring a fully charged iPad or laptop
Most airports now have wi-fi, and in most places it is free. If your flight is delayed, you will be able to keep yourself amused during the wait with your fully charged electronics. Finding a plug can also prove to be quite challenging, especially when lots of flights are delayed as everyone else is going to be using out these outlets as well.
The airline didn’t decide to intentionally ruin your day, and I can promise that whatever agent you have found to yell at had absolutely nothing to do with the delay or cancellation of your trip. Let’s think about this one reasonably, would you go drive your car in a blizzard, fog, hail storm, tornado or whatever else mother nature throws at you? Likely not, so if you wouldn’t drive in it, why would you ever suggest that we should go flying in it?
Just because it is sunny here, doesn’t mean that it is sunny wherever that plane came from. Airplanes look best in the air, which is why most airlines keep them there between 13 and 18 hours a day with approximately 30 minutes or less scheduled on the ground at each stop. If the plane does start to run behind schedule, your crew and ground handlers are doing everything they can to get the plane back on schedule safely because they want that bird to fly just as badly as you.
Airport food can be expensive. If you do get delayed, there usually isn’t a whole lot for your little monsters to do aside from add to your travel frustrations. Bringing dry snacks from home are allowed to be brought through security provided you are travelling domestically. Some food may be brought through customs, but most fruits and veggies are not allowed so check with the international laws of the country you are headed too before you select those items.
It is against the law for the airline to allow boarding to passengers who are intoxicated. While it is perfectly acceptable to go and have a drink or two while waiting for your flight, missing your flight cause you were drinking isn’t a good reason at all. Being denied boarding can be not only costly as you may be subject to fees or fare forfeiture, but it is also embarrassing as you will have to explain to a lot of people why you missed your flight. You may also be watch listed on future travel depending on your attitude if you are denied.
Let’s all have a great vacation this year and do our part to make airline travel a little easier on everyone! Happy travels!
